Training

We offer a number of training courses that we offer from research techniques to design to accessibility.

Practical UX: An introduction to user experience

We will provide a general introduction to the principles of user experience. This course gives an overview of many tools and techniques that UX practitioners use to create great user experiences. We look at the design of everyday objects, and the quality of the user experience they offer, as well as the factors that influence the quality of a design. You’ll also learn about why it’s important to balance the user’s needs with your business objectives and what to do when there’s a conflict between the two.

We’ll show you why it’s essential that you learn about your users, and you’ll learn to use some handy tools to help you get to know your user, such as user profiling and personas. You’ll also learn about the design process itself, and how user-centred design fits in with traditional software development cycles.

Practical Web Accessibility

Learn the tools and techniques to evaluate web accessibility, apply universal design principles for creating accessible online content, and understand the legal requirements for accessible websites.

With Federal Government putting the accessibility of websites under the microscope, the word on the street is that accessibility is going to be a key focus for both business and government this year. Many organisations understand that accessibility isn’t just something to do here and now, but recognise that staff need to be provided with the skills and techniques to ensure compliance into the future.

We are really pleased to see this renewed focus on accessibility, and are very proud to be able to assist our clients to learn about the intricacies of WCAG 2.0 and accessible design.

If you, your colleagues – heck, even your boss! – need to get up to speed on what accessibility is all about, learn new skills or just keep up to date with the latest testing and accessible design techniques, we would love to see you on our next Practical Accessibility course.

Writing for the Web

Does your editorial team know how to produce copy for website that really works? Many people who write for the web are not trained writers, and are used to writing a different type of document, such as a business report. This course will give participants insight into how to adjust their writing style to produce copy that their users will be able to easily digest.

User Centred Design Techniques

A common problem with the user requirements gathering process is that users will often tell you what they think they want rather than what they actually need. Because users find the traditional requirements elicitation process difficult to understand, they will often sign off requirements even if they don’t understand them or think that functionality may be missing, so as to avoid looking stupid.

This course will arm you with a set of techniques that will ensure you gain maximum insight into user’s thoughts, feelings and actual behaviour. We’ll also teach you when is the most appropriate time to use each technique. This is a highly practical course that will have you using these techniques on your project the very next day.

Usability Evaluation Techniques

A usability evaluation is a review of a tool or product to determine whether it is fit for users. Testing with users early and often can help reveal any issues with the design immediately. We’ll teach you how to set up and run both formal and informal usability tests, as well as usability walkthroughs and their benefits. We’ll look at some software tools to support usability testing, and also teach you how to conduct a heuristic usability evaluation. You’ll also learn how to report the findings from usability tests.

Information Architecture Techniques

Participants learn some of the common pitfalls experienced in the design of information architectures. They are introduced to powerful techniques called Card Sorting (as well as some different software that is used to run these sessions) which can be used to design effective information structures. Case studies and exercises will cement your understanding of the techniques.

Facilitating Requirements Gathering

Running a workshop can be a nerve wracking exercise. Not only do you need to get the right people to your workshop, you need to manage the group dynamics and get the most from each workshop participant.

This course will teach you how to structure and plan a good workshop, as well as how to get the right people there in the first place. We’ll look at how to manage tricky groups with dominant or shy people, as well as groups that may be in disagreement.
